Despair

Sometimes it all gets too much. Children are sick, school is becoming more demanding, extended family become painful, health is uncertain and there is no sleep on the horizon. It is easy to despair, yet these can be the realities of life in the twenty-first century in Australia.

The apostle Paul knew something of hardship as well:

2 Corinthians 11:23-28 (ESV)

23 Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. 24 Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. 28 And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches.

Knowing this I am so very humbled when I read this same Paul say:

Philippians 3:8 (ESV)

8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ

This is simply courage to move beyond the visible. It is the expression of faith in Our Heavenly Father to trust Him to deal with our troubles especially when they seem so overwhelming. He is a Good Father after all.

My prayer is that you will know the value you have in God’s Kingdom. Our troubles whilst big are no match for our even bigger God. May these words from King David be a comfort to you:

Psalms 145:8 (ESV)

8 The LORD is gracious and merciful,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
