Rusty

It’s true that when living near the seaside, things begin to rust. The salt in the sea air contributes to this phenomenon and can cause quite catastrophic damage over a short period of time. The effect is quite drastic as once shiny and strong objects become dull and weak.

Our relationship with our Father in Heaven is the source of life and love in our lives. All goodness and joy comes from Him. Yet it is possible to drift away from His perfect Will even without really noticing. We can become distracted with the issues and concerns of day to day living. It can only take a day or two and we’ll already have drifted away into our own ways.

The writer of Hebrews implores his readers:

Hebrews 2:1 (ESV)

1 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

This is a daily remembrance of the goodness and the faithfulness of our Lord. Yet this ‘paying attention’ requires us to do far more than to simply be introspective in our gaze. The Apostle Paul reminds us to:

2 Corinthians 13:5 (ESV)

5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

Are you living by faith? What are you believing God for today? Have you spoken with the Lord today and are you waiting expectantly for His answer?

Just as we might inspect a metal object for any defect or signs of rust, we must also examine ourselves. We bear the Light of Christ in the form of the Holy Spirit within us. Yet our rustiness is prone to covering the shine that He wants us to have through our lives and into that of others. I encourage you to dust off the rust through a thorough application of God’s Word, so that you might once again shine the Light of Christ as God intended.
